Quinta dos Machados

Country House & Spa, Portugal

Quinta dos Machos Review: Anniversaries are special and should be celebrated in style. Well that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. I’ve heard the same old saying….when you’ve had as many anniversaries as us you get sick and tired of celebrating them.

But for me or should I say us, we like put more emphasis on making a new memory for the anniversary rather than spending unnecessary money on gifts we simply don’t need.

Regardless of your opinion on the matter, ‘The First Anniversary’ should always hold some sort of special celebration. For us we decided on a romantic night in the Portuguese Countryside, in the beautiful Quinta dos Machados Country House & Spa.

Just what was needed to reminisce about the special day, enjoy each others company and indulge in some of the finer things in life i.e.. spa treatments, good wine &  a lazy day by the pool.

How to find Quinta dos Machados

Quinta dos Machados is a rustic yet modern Quinta in the rural valley of Gradil, Mafra. About a 30 minute drive from Lisbon, it can only be accessed by car, but takes you on a breathtaking drive through rolling hills, deep valleys and sweet smelling vineyards.

It’s super easy to find and is set on an impressive estate with beautiful historic buildings, hectors of land and a grand entrance of welcoming trees leading to the grounds.

Arriving at Quinta dos Machados

We arrived at Quinta dos Machados just in time to check in (making the most of our stay)! We had booked a traditional room in the older part of the Quinta but were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to one of their amazing modern rooms in the new building.

Our room the “Alma Portuguesa” which translates to Portuguese Soul was simply perfect and was the epitome of everything Portuguese.

Everything in the room was unique and had a story of how they ended up in Quinta dos Machados as their new home. Our balcony overlooked pine trees as far as the eye could see. It was truly a tranquil and relaxing setting to start our day.

The Spa

We headed straight to the Spa and Sauna area, situated in the new building beside reception.  An added bonus was that we were the only ones there, having the entire sauna to ourselves.

The jacuzzi and turkish baths were amazing and just what the doctor ordered. The Spa area was peaceful with a calm ambience, where you can also get massage treatments done. It was just how it should be – total Bliss.

The Outdoor Spaces

After total relaxation, it was time to soak up some rays at the outdoor pool. The idyllic setting surrounding the pool area made for another peaceful escape from our usual busy day.

Unfortunately the pool bar was closed at the time, but this didn’t bother us much as we were looking forward to enjoying our Wedding Wine from “Quinta de Sant’ana” that we managed to keep unopened for one whole year. (Definitely a first for us!)

The Restaurant

The quirky restaurant decor was inviting and relaxing at the same time.  As the outdoor fit pit blazed and the dimly lit candles burned on our table we felt as comfortable as if we were in our our living room.

There was a great mix of modern furniture, with up cycled and used materials, blending in nicely with the rustic environment of the Quinta.

At the time of booking we added a 3 course meal option which worked out at fantastic value. Check here to see if this option is still available.

We started off with a welcome drink,  and were treated to a glass of bubbly with cinnamon and lemon, not a bad start at all!

The menu was seasonal and fresht, and we narrowed down the selection to try the Bacalhau, which is famous Portuguese salted cod.  When we return next time I would love to see a few more selections on the menu and maybe even a vegetarian option.

All the dishes were well presented with a great blend of flavour. The best was yet to come in the form of a chocolate brownie. A little tip is to make sure and order two different desserts, the brownie was huge and could definitely be shared between two.

With a great list of wines and an even better selection of Gin’s, an evening sipping your favourite flavour with great company in this perfect setting will leave you checking in for longer.

The Surrounds

If you need stimulation by shops and activities then this place is not for you. But if you can entertain yourself, enjoy the great outdoors and switch off for a day or two to immerse yourself in the simple life then you will have come to the right place.

Quinta dos Machados

With 15 hectares of forest full of pine trees you can take long walks or a jog around the area.  Cozy up with a romantic picnic for two or top up your tan and cool off in the refreshing pool.

When you need to unwind, relax with a massage and a spa treatment.   Top your day off with delicious food at the restaurant and a good nights sleep in one of their chic stylish rooms.

We thoroughly enjoyed getting away from everything and being surrounded by nature. Deciding to spend our first anniversary in Quinta dos Machados was most definitely the right choice and we will most definitely be back next year if not before that.
