When you KNOW it’s time for CHANGE!

Welcome to the first post in a new series we’ve called ‘No More Monday Blues’.  We all need a little inspiration on a Monday when the dreaded work week rolls around again.

Every Monday we aim to bring you a new post to inspire you to follow your dreams, embrace change in your life or simply find your passion.

Here’s a quick tale about how our dream to travel the world came about and how you can make your dream come true.

For the past 5 years on and off we were living and working as English Teachers in Seoul, South Korea, hence the variety of posts we have on teaching tips, winter in Korea, biking etc.

And I can honestly say without fail it was an amazing opportunity that we both are very grateful for.

Leaving home at the tender age of 25 we had no expectations, previous experience or real plan for the year ahead.

We were equipped with courage, excitement and a desire to see the world and experience as much as we possibly could.

Deciding to fly to Korea for work was essentially our ticket to travel with the added bonus of a steady income and a closer base to South East Asia, for which we already had a fondness for and a longing to explore in depth.

What we didn’t expect was to fall in love with Seoul, meet amazing friends, learn the language, appreciate the culture, travel to (almost) every country in South East Asia, save enough money to buy a house and get married, become inspired to create a travel blog and travel the world for a living! All this and much much more!

When you KNOW it's time for CHANGE

We simply cannot put it into words how much our lives and attitudes have changed since the day and hour we left home to start our Korean journey.

In our first year we were totally blown away by everything. There was so much to see and do that our contract came to an end way before we were ready to leave.

Naturally we signed another year, which we later realised seemed to be the norm for a lot of other foreigners teaching in Seoul. The next two years flew by in a world-wind of adventure, trips abroad, retreats and of course numerous contacts and cute little Korean kiddies. When we thought we’d seen and done it all, we decided it was time to return home.

We cried the whole way to the airport for a city that felt like our home. We had made an amazing life there for the past few years and it was a sad day saying goodbye to it all.

But there seemed to be a force pulling us home, our sub conscious minds secretly telling us it was time to settle down, get a real job and live in the real world.

It wasn’t long before we got itchy feet. The simple life at home just didn’t compare to the city that never slept and the endless hours that could be spent indulging in any activity we wanted right on our doorstep. We’d seen too much.

Every night as we sat at home trying to fit in, we would reminisce about life in Seoul, our one bedroom studio, smaller than our ‘now’ bathroom and the lifestyle we kept. The universe was conspiring to take us back!

When you KNOW it’s time for CHANGE!

Our second time felt different, we were a few years more mature, we didn’t want for parties or nightlife and we were content going to work everyday, and enjoying our free time on weekends. We had lost our adventurous spark for explorations.

We questioned ourselves, was it the right decision to come back? In our minds it certainly was the right decision, we knew it wholeheartedly but we just didn’t have the desire we once had to explore new things, venture near and far on weekends and avail of everything the city had to offer.

What I love most about living in a new place is feeling like a tourist. Getting lost, seeing things for the first time, using a map to navigate the city (I have a weird fascination with maps) and trying out the local cuisine, I love newness.

Janice calls me a magpie because I love new and shiny things and it’s the same for travel. It’s a great feeling to appreciate each day and get excited about what’s in store.

When you KNOW it's time for CHANGE

Upon our return to Korea, that feeling disappeared. We didn’t need a map, we knew the train routes without even looking, we’d seen so many of our favourite cafe’s close and new ones open in their place and the excitement for our everyday adventures subsided.

We chose to go back to Seoul because we were comfortable with the city, we knew what to expect and we knew it would take no time at all for us to slip back into to the lifestyle we reminisced about back home in Ireland.

It becomes so easy for all of us to get complacent, in everything we do. What starts out as an occurrence, soon becomes our routine and quickly becomes our life.

If we’re not careful we’ll stroll through life without ever realising we’re not excited about waking up everyday to experience a new adventure.

The truth is, we get distracted with routine, become comfortable with our surroundings and get bogged down with work to even notice.

When you KNOW it's time for CHANGE

If you go to bed tonight and you don’t wake up tomorrow and jump out of bed excited about what’s to come for the day ahead then whats the point in it all?

Whats the point in life really, if you don’t have the desire to do great things, explore the unknown, take risks, and live your life to the full?!

When you wake up everyday with dread for what’s to come, then you know its time for a change. It’s time to sit down, make a plan and vouch to make every moment count.

What is it that makes you happy? Whatever it is, would it not make sense to do it more, and do it often? It’s not hard really, if you want something strong enough you will make it happen, if you don’t then you only have yourself to blame.

If you wake up today with dread and you continue to wake up tomorrow with the same feeling, yet do absolutely nothing to change it, you are actually making a conscious decision to live that life!

When you KNOW it’s time for CHANGE!

I’ve only recently came across the biggest secret to achieving the life you dream of and it’s very simple. It’s all about believing you can instead of thinking you can’t.

Everything is possible in life. If you want to live everyday on a deserted island or be a millionaire then make it happen. Believe you can do it, make it your goal and pursue it every day until it happens. Once you figure out what you want (which can actually be the hardest part), think about it everyday, imagine yourself actually living that life.

Do the things you would do as if you have already achieved your goal and eventually you will become that person and that dream will be a reality.  In order to follow your dreams, you have to actually believe in yourself and have faith that you can achieve your dream.

I’ll leave you with a favourite quote of ours and our mantra for inspiring great things within :

Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds.

Are you ready to embrace change, and live a life of ‘no more Monday blues’?  Are you ready to follow your dreams and make them a reality?  I hope this will inspire greatness in all of you and help you realise when it’s time for change.
